Just shy of her second birthday we finally took M for her first haircut. She was an absolute champ!

We finally made it out to the BIG local Farmers’ Market last weekend. We got a ton of goodies for a friend’s gift basket, ate some yummy food (Indian, homemade donuts, etc) and listed to some awesome music. M even got to bang on the drum. As always I was thrilled to see a ton of cute dogs – I am such a sucker for a cute puppy. This is the part of summer that I love, not the heat. I can’t believe it’s almost August already. Where has the summer gone?
I won’t have her two year old stats for about 10 days, but here are some photos from Miss M’s birthday party this past weekend. She had a great time blowing bubbles on the deck while the rest of us chatted. She ate the heck out of a cupcake and enjoyed putting empty bottles in the recycling bin. What can I say – we’re classy!
We haven’t counted her words in ages because she’s talking up a storm, repeating everything and loves singing to herself. She’s very particular and always wants to be the one to do everything herself – flush the toilet (no we haven’t started potty training), close the door, put on the dog’s collar, feed the dog, turn on the light, read the book, pet the cat, let the dog out, put the dog in her kennel and on and on. She loves reading her books, although they all have the same story (Llama Llama, Red Pajama or Pete the Cat – I Love My White Shoes). She sings Brother John, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Om Shanti, ABCs. She’s really starting to identify numerals and letters. She counts to ten and loves counting things. She gets up super early (usually by 5:30am) and is having some trouble getting to sleep these days (sometimes it’s not until between 8:30-9pm). What else? She loves playing with bubbles, coloring, going for walks, playing on the slide or swing, pulling weeds in the garden, swiffering the floor – she’s quite the little helper! She usually wakes up crying instead of cooing or talking, she’s still afraid of motorcycle sounds and she has the most awesome laugh! She’s such a great kid! Happy Birthday Miss M!
I can’t believe it’s already been five weeks since my parents arrived and their trip is nearly over. We’ve had such a great time and they’ve been such a help with getting our house on the market. They have loved hanging with M and she’s loved them right back – “so much” in her words. Speaking of words, she has them all. She just talks now, and it’s amazing.
Oh my goodness, really, no posts in over a month?! I’m so ashamed. That’s a month of my kid’s life totally undocumented. I looked back at the photos on my computer – almost none! Tisk Tisk. Well, I have tons of excuses. We’ve been house hunting a little closer to R’s work and a little closer to where my office will be moving as of Sept 1. We had our realtor over to look at our house – can we even sell it? We needed new carpet and some color on the walls. Luckily a good friend is a good painter too and he came over on his only day off a week for several weeks, painting one room at a time each week. So, the house has felt a little out of whack for a while. A week ago we packed up a lot of stuff and the new carpet was installed in the entire house, minus bathroom, kitchen and dining room. It looks great! On Monday, the house goes on the market. It’s estimated we’ll get exactly what we paid for it 8 years ago, but I just couldn’t bring myself to list it at that price, so we’ve listed $10k above the 2004 sale price, in hopes we can make some “profit.” We put the house hunting on hold. What’s the point, if you can’t even sell the house you already own?
Also during this time, R’s mom came to visit for a week, my parents arrived and M had a bought of sickness and possible dehydration that took us to the hospital for an afternoon. How cute is she in this mini hospital gown?
Also, R has been given another class to teach at school, so is now officially a full time teacher and I graduated after my almost year long, 200 hour yoga teacher training and am a Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Teacher.
It’s been a crazy month. I’m sure I’m leaving out some things!
We had a girls’ weekend this weekend as R headed to Florida for four nights. It’s not the longest he’s been away from M, but it’s the longest he’s been gone where I haven’t had help. We had a great time. I kept my cool in tough situations, M slept like a champ (until 7am one day even!) and we did some fun stuff. Thursday night we just laid low. Friday night we hit up the downtown Blues Fest. Saturday we delivered a freezer to some friends, we went to music class, but couldn’t stay because Home Depot called to say they were on their way to come measure for our new carpet. We went to the grocery store. We cooked Black Bean and Quinoa Chili and Cornbread Muffins for (my) dinner. Sunday we met with a landscaping guy about what’s left of our tree in the front yard from the October snow storm. I can’t believe we’re still cleaning up from that. We hit two planned and three unplanned open houses. We spent some time coloring and some more time giggling. It was a nice weekend, but we’re glad to have R back tonight.
I know everything comes and goes, but we’ve had some difficult evenings this week. First M was scared of the neighbor’s motorcycle one night, then we had thunderstorms at bedtime another night. She’s been waking up more often during the night as well. I’m *hoping* she’s getting her final teeth, her two year molars. It’d be so nice to know we’re done with teething. The other night when I got up, this is how I found Izzie sleeping!
I can’t believe how many things have milk and butter in them! I couldn’t find a loaf of bread that didn’t have milk. My only hope at a restaurant was french fries or a salad with just lettuce. Guess you can’t blame a wing place! But the place where I finally broke down was a friend’s house. How can you pass up an “egg boat?” It was basically scrambled eggs on french bread with cheese and chives. So yummy. So, we enjoyed great food and great company with our friends and their little ones.
Since I last posted, I’ve tried a few new recipes and they all rocked: Broccoli Noodles with Thai Peanut Sauce, Easy Fried Rice, Clean and Fresh Quinoa Tabouli, Maple Tamari Roasted Almonds and Roasted Eggplant Napolean (pictured below).
I’m on my own each morning, and sometimes it’s tough. Sometimes it runs smoothly, but sometimes each task is a struggle – lay down on changing table, take off old diaper, put on new diaper, get loaded up with sunscreen, put on clothes, put on shoes, put on socks, do hair. And after all that, here is the face I kept getting this morning. All the while she says, “Mommy, stop it,” ” No, thank you” or “Mommy, walk away.”
Tonight after dinner we snuck in some last minute family time swinging and picking strawberries. Love M’s shirt – it says “Happiness Grows in My Garden.” We got our three raised beds planted this weekend. We were happy to see that the strawberries from last year were still around and already producing yummy fruit.
How nice to have a long weekend. How nice to really enjoy a weekend and not feel (as) stressed to get it all done. We had a very productive day. The three of us spent a few hours in the yard this morning. We got two of our three raised bed gardens planted and started on wedding the third. R got a bunch of stuff cleaned up near our “stream.” M enjoyed swinging, running around, kicking the soccer ball and throwing the basketball at Izzie. She just loves being outside. Then she and I came inside while R mowed the lawn. She surprised me by sitting on the couch while I vacuumed and cleaned almost the entire house. She played pretend games with her finger, sang songs, read her book and just generally relaxed. It was so cute and so unexpected. I have never even tried to vacuum with her not in her high chair before because it makes her a little nervous, but she did just fine.
I got to go to Home Depot, Sam’s and the grocery store solo and didn’t feel at all like I had to hurry home. I did hurry though, but just because it was so hot and my purchases were getting too warm!

Tonight I had my helper with me in the kitchen again. I’m on day 7 of my vegan workshop and I made Butternut Squash and Apple Soup with homemade wheat bread for dinner. R paired his with a nice strip steak. He was starting to feel outnumbered so he made sure M ate some red meat too.
PS – M is 22 months old today. I can’t even believe it.
