One Thing From My Friends

Last week I posted about the one new thing I am going to try to do everyday. My hope is I can make these things habits, like making the bed when I get up (I actually do that, even though I never did growing up!) and doing the dishes before bed.

I’m working on my list, but here are some things my friends said they wanted to try to do if they were to add one thing a day.

  • Say morning prayers
  • Say something kind to a stranger
  • 10 minutes stretching
  • One productive thing after the kids go to bed
  • Do something nice for someone else
  • One outdoor activity
  • Read to child for 20 minutes
  • Hair and makeup
  • Remember blessings
  • Run
  • Say bedtime prayer with kids
  • Call family
  • Let go of one worry
  • 10 minutes for myself
  • Facial routine
  • Drink more water
  • Yoga every morning
  • Be fully present
  • List three things grateful for
  • Floss
  • Play guitar
  • Read to kids
  • Give dog more love
  • Read
  • Do something for myself

Do you have any to add?

Prepping for the New Year

Happy almost New Year! I’m wondering if the moms out there make resolutions? I used to . . . until I had a kid! The year I became a mom, I took it easier on myself and stopped making resolutions and started listing out my hopes. Such as, in 2011, I HOPE to . . . get to the yoga studio once a week, plant a garden, walk the dog more often. That way, it’s not that I am breaking a resolution, I’m just not doing something I had kind of hoped to do. Much less rigid.

This is my first New Year with two kids. I’m taking it simpler than even “hopes” for this upcoming year. I’m taking it one day at a time here people. I can’t take credit for the idea though – my fellow blogger, Vivian, over at CtWorkingMoms.com had the idea first (but weekly). I think Gretchen Rubin also did something similar when she was writing The Happiness Project. (BTW, this is a book I would highly recommend for a little New Year’s reading).

The Plan:

Come up with a list of several things I’d like to do every single day – small things. Put those into a jar and pick one a day. It could be in the morning for that day, or the night before for the next day. Start that thing as a daily routine and then choose another one for the next day – adding to the previous days’ things. Track the whole thing somehow. Don’t kill myself over it.

Getting Started:

First thing I did was create quick a list for myself. Then I emailed a bunch of people to see what their “one thing” would be and noted those.

To Do:

I’ve got to finalize my list, pick a jar and most importantly figure out how to track this and keep myself accountable.

I’ll post some sample daily resolutions soon.

PS – if you’re up for making “hopes” and need some inspiration, here are mine from 2011, 2012 and it looks like I neglected to do anything for 2013. In my defense I was about to have a baby and there was just about no extra planning happening!

Baby’s First Thanksgiving

We had a great Thanksgiving in New Hampshire. We were able to get out of dodge early on Wednesday and left town by 2pm. We had two good nights sleep wise from the girls. S was pretty clingy while we were there, not really letting me put her down or anyone else hold her for any length of time or if I was in view. Today she seemed very tired and fussy as well. It looks like her top two teeth are about to bust through. I hope they hurry up and do so!

Look how excited M is to be on the road to New Hampshire! And she made an adorable turkey hat at school.

S was pretty exhausted on the day after Thanksgiving. I finally got her down for a morning nap and the only safe place to put her to sleep (pack and play was in our room in the barn) was on the cat’s pillow on the floor. Sorry S.

Now that R’s thesis is turned it, he’s finally getting some good time with S.11-28-13 S and Dad

When Companies Do Good Things

Here’s my latest post on CTWorkingMoms.com. Some co-workers and I formed a committee and we got company sponsored volunteer time added as one of our benefits of employment!

10 Months Old

S is 10 months old. I can’t believe how fast the time is going by with my second baby. She’ll be a toddler soon. She’s pulling up on things, but not walking holding onto furniture or trying to stand up unaided yet. She’s pretty consistently napping twice a day. She goes to bed around 7pm and sleeps until about 5am or so. It might have taken her a while to start laughing, but this one is a goof now. She loves loves loves watching her sister and M can easily make her crack up. She’s not saying any words, but does say “uh-oh” a lot. Daycare reports that she’s very sweet and loves singing to the other babies. She used to just let M take toys away from her, but now she has an ear piercing screech that she makes anytime she’s not getting her way or something is taken from her. As I said yesterday, she’s experimenting with biting while nursing and she’s starting to suck her thumb as she falls asleep. She’s eating tons of solid food and prefers it to baby food. We try to give her whatever we’re having, but I haven’t been very adventurous so she’s getting a lot of pasta and macaroni and cheese. She’s a real sweetheart and she’s really all about her mama right now.

Hair, Biting and Thumb Sucking

S is 10 months old tomorrow! Just wanted to post this photo of her awesome hair. It’s really growing and sticking up a lot like how her older sister’s hair did at this age.

This picture shows her two bottom teeth. She still only has two teeth. It seems like she’s teething all the time and that more teeth are about to come through, but then they don’t. I wonder if they’ll all come in at once. At this age M had six teeth. She’s really starting to get me with those teeth when she’s nursing. And I’m pretty sure she knows exactly what she’s doing. She does it at the same point almost every time lately. I say NO pretty firmly and remove her (not forcefully) and she does this little whining sob every time, like she’s sorry. It’s pretty cute and funny, but it certainly hurts!

She’s also started sucking her thumb at nap time and bedtime. When she puts her head down on my chest the thumb goes right into her mouth. It’s super cute and seems to be helping her fall asleep. I’ll save the rest (and probably repeat myself) for her ten month photo tomorrow.
