Girls’ Weekend In Boston

What a whirlwind weekend!  On Saturday morning, Miss M and I headed to Boston to visit my cousin, Amy.  I was a little nervous about a solo road trip with the kid, but there was no reason to be.  It’s only about an hour and a half drive to Boston, and I’ve learned to time road trips with nap times, so she slept the whole way there.  M and I parked at the Children’s Museum and headed over to check out the Occupy Wall Street protesters near South Station.

It was pretty unexciting.  People were just milling around.  There were about 30 people standing around a person with megaphone who was telling people about the logistics, like where the media tent was, where you can smoke and where you can’t and asking for volunteers for certain things.  All in all pretty uneventful.

After we met up with Amy, we headed over the Children’s Museum.  We checked out the 0-3 play space, where M especially liked the groceries and shopping basket.

After she finished her shopping, we headed over to the bubble room.  She liked watching Amy blow bubbles and liked putting her hands into the bubbles.  But soon she got tired and starting rubbing her eyes, and thus rubbing the soapy water in her eyes.  So we washed her face and headed out to Amy’s new apartment.

Amy’s apartment is in the super cute and uber Italian North End of Boston.  She has a 24-hour bakery within walking distance.  Luckily she lives on the four floor of a building with no elevator, so she can eat as many pastries as she wants. We trucked the pack and play and all our gear up the steep old stairs to Amy’s adorable apartment.  She was kind enough to give us her room.  After settling in and refusing a nap, we headed back out to explore Boston.  We went to the Holocaust Memorial, got gelato, walked by a movie set, visited the farmer’s market, visited the Old North Church (the location where the famous “One if by land, and two if by sea” signal is said to have been sent), did some window shopping at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, swung by McFadden’s (home of the New England Gator Club) and finished off the day by wading in the Canal Fountain on the Rose Kennedy Greenway.  Even though M was pretty tired and spaced out by the end of the day, the cool water in the fountain sure brought her back around.  She loved it.  She wanted to put her hands in the water too.  She walked right over to the water shooting up, and didn’t hesitate to touch it.

After the fountain, we headed back to Amy’s apartment, got into our soft clothes, ate pizza and cannoli, kissed ourselves goodnight in the mirror and headed for bed early.

Miss M slept all night and we enjoyed a lovely brunch with Amy before heading home 24 hours after we arrived.  It was a great trip and so good to see Amy!

Quality Da-Da Time

It’s been a busy couple of weeks. Heck, it’s been a busy month!  R’s new job is good, but demanding.  Many nights between work and gigs, he doesn’t get home before M goes to bed.  Then he’s up late doing lesson plans and leaving before she gets up in the morning.  In the beginning, she’d hear him and get up before 6am to see him, but the last few days she’s slept until 7am (which I love!).  So, the quality da-da time is even more important now that their time together is limited during the week.  Da-da let her stay up a little late and watch Raffi on YouTube.  She was captivated – as you can see!

Hello Fall!

It was a chilly 39 degrees when we headed out this morning.  Time to go shopping for a real jacket for the little one. I’ve commissioned a new hat from an old high school friend, so we’re all set there.  I’ll be sure to post photos when it arrives! We also need to get some warm PJs!  Last year when it was cold she was still sleeping in the sleep sacks/wearable blankets.

14 Months Old

Miss M is 14 months and 1 week old.  I took her to the doctor because she’s been feeling under the weather.  At first I thought it might have been a runny nose from her first two molars coming in (her 9th tooth that I posted about a few weeks ago was actually just the tip of a molar coming in!).  The runny nose got grosser and she’s been up several nights.  Finally after about 3 hours up in the middle of the night Sunday night, I took her to the doctor.  Sure enough, she’s teething like CRAZY, has a cold/sinus thing and an ear infection.  So, now she’s on antibiotics and hopefully she’ll be feeling better soon.  The doctor was concerned with her weight loss.  BUT, thanks to my record keeping on this blog, I figured out that the doctor must have mis-read the 12 month weight.  The doctor thought her weight at 1 year was 22lbs, but upon a further inspection of her file, she was 20 lbs.  At 14 months, she is 19.5 lbs.  So, while she has lost weight, she’s not as bad as we thought.  We’ll work to get her rounded out and she’ll be enjoying liverwurst for dinner.

The good news is, since there has been less fatty foods around our house (I haven’t been buying ice cream or eating the candy or sweets people bring to work) I have lost almost 15 lbs!  I’ve been doing yoga and walking too.  I feel great!

Words

Miss M’s vocabulary sure is growing:

Izzie, Mama, Dada, Cracker, All Done, More, Shoes, Keys, Kitty, Pretty and probably several other things that we haven’t quite figured out.

I’m Finally Smart

I’ve finally entered the smart phone era.  Hey, better late than never.  I can’t believe what I was missing!  Here’s how it went down . . . R said he needed a new Palm Pilot.  I did the research and they don’t even make those things anymore.  I tried to talk him into getting a smart phone with a Google calendar compatible calendar and he wouldn’t.  So, I got him an iPod Touch.  I was jealous, and also convinced myself that we needed to be able to sync our calendars, so after much hemming and hawing, I got an iPhone.  I got a refurbed one from At&t, so it was only $9 for the phone, $18 upgrade fee and new 2-year contract.  I could not bring myself to pay for a new phone.  So, now our google calendars are synced, and I’ve given up my paper calendar.  Can you believe it!  But check out all these great things I can do to get and keep organized digitally:

1. gTasks – an app that lets me add tasks and set reminders, etc.  Kind of like my digital to-do list.  I add in things like remembering to pay daycare weekly and buy bagels for the intern’s last day tomorrow.

2. Grocery iQ – You can organize by aisles, stores, etc.  You can create favorites list and with one touch add them to your current grocery list.  I think on a Droid phone you can even add things to your list with verbal cues.  You can sync with a spouse or roommate’s phone so that it’s easy to see what others have added to the list.  It’s owned by coupons.com so you can even get coupons.

3. My Fitness Pal – You enter your weight/height/age, etc, amount of weight you’d like to lose, how much you’d like to lose per week and it calculates the number of calories you should eat per day.  Then you can search a gazillion items to record what you eat.  You can add ingredients for a recipe you’ve made and it will calculate the calories.  You can track workouts and calories burned.

There are so many cool apps!  What’s your favorite?

Why Isn’t Every Day A Weekend Day?

I guess if every day was a weekend day, we’d never fully appreciate the weekends.  This past weekend I had my first of 12 weekends (ten 3-day weekends and two Saturday-only weekends) of (200-hr) Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) that will happen over the next ten months.  It was intense, and wonderful, and scary.  I was less scared then I thought I would be, but I am still totally out of my element.  I haven’t been in school in ten years!  I assume I practice less than everyone else in the room, but who knows, and that’s not important.  One of the things I hope to gain from this is some self confidence not to compare myself to other people.   I want to hold myself up to standards and ethics, but there is no reason to think I am any better or any worse than anyone else.  I want to just be the person my dog thinks I am.

Anyway, I want in to this being nervous, but not as nervous as I thought I’d be.  I guess one of the benefits of being so busy is you don’t even have time to worry or maybe I am finally chilling out a little bit.  On Friday night, we skipped the housekeeping things, and got right down to yoga.  We practiced from about 6:30pm – 9:30pm.  What a great way to start the weekend.  On Saturday morning, I had M to myself, since R was taking his Praxis II, his final step to public school teacher certification (results in a few weeks).  I was glad to have this quality time with her, because I was then gone from 12:30 – 6:30pm on Saturday and 8:30am – 5:30pm on Sunday.  There was a lot of practice, some meditation, some lecture.  I really soaked it all in.  I can’t wait until my books arrive so I can start studying.  What a difference it makes when you’re studying something you’re really interested in!  We’ll be learning the techniques, the background, the philosophy, everything. I can hardly wait for the next weekend.

In the meantime, I’ll work to cultivate a home practice and will be thankful if I can make it to my favorite studio once a week.  If I make it twice a week I will jump with joy!  I’m already feeling like I am taking deeper breaths off the mat and really hope I can keep the momentum for the amazing weekend close to my heart.

A Day In The Life

This type of blog has been on my to-write list for a while.  Maybe no one is interested, but I know I am sure interested to see how other people pack it all in to a day and still manage to sit back and enjoy this roller coaster of life! So here’s a little sneak peak into our routine, which has sure changed now that R is teaching.  Unfortunately mine doesn’t come with photos this time around.  Here goes nothing . . .

5am – R’s alarm goes off.  I do not allow any snooze button pushing.  I love love love that I am not the first one to get up anymore.  I thought I’d be annoyed every time his alarm went off, but it’s so nice to roll over and not be the one getting out of bed (sorry, dear).  R takes care of feeding the dog, releasing the cat from her nighttime jail that is the laundry room, and lets the dog out to pee.

5:30am – R gets out of the shower and wakes me up.  I hop right up and into the shower because I am still kind of awake from the alarm.  When I get out of the shower, I clean up the bathroom, make the bed, etc.

5:50am – I eat a quick breakfast, usually cereal, before Miss M gets up (sometimes she gets up when she hears Ryan, around 5:15am – 5:30am, in which case she comes and snuggles with me).

6am – Usually around this time M wakes up.  She often wakes up screaming to get out of her crib.  There is no cooing and playing in the crib in the morning anymore.  If she sleeps in a little, I start unloading the dry dishes from the night before and prepping her breakfast, or picking out what I will wear that day.

6:10 – 6:20am – Once she wakes up, I change her diaper, get her greased up with sunscreen, and get her dressed (she hates putting on sunscreen).

6:20 – 6:45am – M hangs in her highchair and usually eats fruit (banana, mango, peach, pear), applesauce and baby cereal (I spoon feed her this), and/or half of a small pancake.  She doesn’t eat much and usually ends up throwing most of her food over the side or against the wall.  She also has milk from her sippy cup – no more bottles for this big girl!  During this time I am getting dressed, brushing hair and teeth, cleaning up kitchen, getting lunches together (packed night before).

6:45 – 7:15am – M and I take Miss Izzie for a nice walk.  If it’s a good day, we go around the two long blocks.  If we’re running late, she just gets to go around the block.

7:30am – Daycare drop off.  It makes me feel good that she’s not usually the first kid there.

8am – I arrive at work.

3pm – Technically I am off the clock, but usually I don’t leave before 3:30pm and I usually run some sort of baby-free errand after work – target, grocery store, haircut.  I bought a year gym membership and had planned to go after work before picking M up, but that hasn’t happened!

4 – 4:30pm – Daycare pickup.  Again, she’s not the last one there, which is always a nice feeling.

4:30pm – 6pm – During this time, we usually go for another walk, a little bit longer than the morning walk.  We play, clean up our lunch dishes, do dinner prep, put away dry dishes from breakfast, get laundry started, start on lunches for tomorrow.  Daddy usually gets home during this time.

6pm – Daddy cooks us all dinner.  For the most part, M eats what we eat now, but some nights we don’t eat until after she goes to bed.  We try hard to eat before she goes to bed.

6:30pm – Watch NBC Nightly News and play with M.

7:00 – 7:30pm – If I have been doing laundry, I put it in the dryer before we start bedtime routine, so it will be ready to fold when I’m done.  We have bath time,  read a book, and go to bed (no milk at bedtime anymore).  Sometimes she goes right to bed, sometimes we have to go in a few times to sooth her, but she’s usually asleep around 8pm or so.

Then, I clean up from dinner (R does the cooking) and do lunch dishes, pack lunches (if I haven’t already), clean up the bathroom from bath time, put away the toys strewn about the house, fold the laundry, clean up the kitchen, do any other chores – scoop litter box, take trash out, pull trash cans around, etc.

9pm or so – Usually I am done with clean up routine around 9pm or so, and I grab a cup of tea and read for half hour or less and fall asleep.  It’s nice now that R has to get up early, because he usually goes to bed at the same time I do.  We always try to be in bed with the light off by 10pm.

Now She’s Really Moving

And off she goes . . .

Hide & Seek

M’s new thing is to crawl or “walk” away from me very fast when I say “I’m coming to get you.”  Then she peeks around a corner and I say “boo!” and she cracks up.  We learned this from our play date with Nolan.

She’s also practicing her standing and her walking a lot today!  My guess is she’ll be full out walking by the end of this next weekend!
