Baby’s First Christmas

We had a great trip to Florida and I think S had a great first Christmas! (More coming later on M and S’s Santa presents). We arrived on Saturday and had a nice relaxing afternoon visit with Papa John and enjoyed some Park Avenue Ribs. On Sunday we had Christmas with my mom’s side of the family and the girls enjoyed playing with my cousin’s adorable children.

On Monday night we went over to Hoffman’s Chocolates to check out their holiday light display and to get some treats. This was a fun tradition when I was a kid and I figured M would love it since she’s been so into the lights this year. She especially loved the train they had setup – oh and her chocolate, she loved that too. She even saved a piece of it for me! Here’s a little family photo from Hoffman’s and a photo of M pretending to be a super hero. Notice her clothes – it’s hot in Florida even in December!

On Christmas Eve morning we opened presents with my parents. Santa also made an early delivery at my parents’ house since we wouldn’t be there for Christmas morning. (More on that in another post).

On Christmas Eve, M and S finally got to see there cousins when we went out for dinner with Papa John and family. After dinner, we went over to Grandma Jane’s house to wait for Santa! We left out milk and cookies. In the morning she discovered that Santa had left a note and a cookie – he couldn’t possibly eat all three she’d left and would she eat the third for breakfast? She was really excited about that. Here she is eating the cookie Santa left behind.

Even though they were far from home, Santa was able to find M and S at Grandma Jane’s house and fill their stockings. Here they are opening their stockings.

On the day after Christmas we headed with Papa John and the rest of the family to Vero Beach for a mini vacation at Costa D’Este Beach Resort. It was super nice and I took next to no photos. I did snap this photo of me and S watching the sunrise (after walking around for 1.5 hours trying to let everyone else in our room sleep in a little). Vacationing with an almost toddler and a preschooler isn’t super relaxing, but S and I managed to get in some great napping in a super comfy hotel bed and we all got to do some swimming.

After two nights in Vero, we went back to my mom and dad’s house for two nights. We had some old friends and their kids over for a play date and M got to make mint chocolate cookies with my mom. Mostly she just licked the chocolate.

We had a slight delay on our return flight but got a free ticket to compensate a super small inconvenience.  Not bad!

First School Program

On the day before we flew to Florida, M had her first school program – a holiday sing-a-long. For this, and other reasons, I took Friday off from work. I arrived at 9:30am to help setup only to find that it was all setup and many parents were already there. Now I know for next year that if you want a good seat you have to arrive really really early! I don’t think I’d have been able to see her well anywhere though because she was sitting in the front row and was behind the drummer. I was only able to snap a few grainy photos. She had been dancing and singing all of the songs at home for weeks, so I was really excited to see her perform. She stood pretty still, just taking it all in. She didn’t seem scared, but she didn’t participate as much as I’d thought she would. However, she did dance her little bottom off while the elementary kids were singing. Doesn’t she look adorable in her little hand me down Christmas dress?!

11 Months Old

On Christmas Day, S was 11 months old! These photos were taken in Florida and really don’t do her spiky hair justice. I’ll post more photos soon where her hair is in its full glory. It’s starting to really remind me of her sister’s hair at this age. She recently went to the doctor for double ear infections just before our Christmas trip to Florida so I can tell you that she weighs in at 17.5 pounds. She sleeps all night. She has 6 teeth through and I think they are just going to keep coming rapid fire. She’s a total goofball. She crawls, pulls up to standing, furniture surfs, walks behind a push toy, eats anything and everything up without any gagging (unlike her sister did at this age). She’s starting to show interest in climbing! She responds to her name and a few other words, blows kisses, gives big open mouth kisses, claps and while always smile when you sing her Row, Row, Row Your Boat.  She’s into everything and wants to touch everything. She knows what she wants, and gets quite upset if that’s taken from her (i.e. M’s toys). She has a distinctive screech that she’s really trying out lately. She puts everything in her mouth, including shoes and dog toys. She likes to dance in her high chair at dinner time.

Merry Christmas from Daycare

I love seeing what my babies make me at school and daycare for Christmas. M brought home a reindeer candy cane that she was SO proud of and that “you can never, ever, ever eat.” S (almost 11 months old) brought home a beautiful card and an adorable ornament with her thumb print. Of course I know that S didn’t make the card and I think it’s just so sweet that the teachers go above and beyond to send home beautiful things like that. We still have the ornaments with S’s photos from when she went to the same daycare. And look at this photo – it looks professional! Not only did I get the card, they also went so far as to burn us a CD with the digital photo.

We’re so lucky to have found a place that takes such care of our babies, nurturing them and teaching them. This week over at CTWorkingMoms.com I’m writing about 10 more reasons why I love daycare!

PS – Miss S is 17 1/2 lbs and just about 11 months old. She has her second ear infection – boo.

18 :: December

These photos are now a few weeks old, but I don’t think I ever posted them. S is doing a few new fun things. She’s dancing to music (she’s actually been doing this a while, but it’s super cute). She’s clapping and she’s even waved a few times. She also seems to be interested in trying to stand up without holding onto something. She’s growing up too fast – seriously! Except for that few week stint around 8-9 months old, she’s continuing to sleep all night. This past weekend she even took a couple of several hour morning naps. That could be her body trying to fight off the illness that’s been around our house – who knows. Whatever it is, it’s great for getting things done around here and getting a little extra special time with M. However, when she gets up from her morning nap at 11am-12pm, the chances of getting them both to sleep at the same time in the afternoon are highly diminished.

First Christmas

Also this weekend, we celebrated our family Christmas. M got some garden tools, an official (small) World Cup soccer ball, a new cup to replace her sippy cups, a cup holder for her carseat, a book about Polar Bears, a heart shaped bowl for her jewelry that she picked out and I painted, a bath toy and a probably few other small things I’m spacing. S got an elephant towel and a few small toys. (We keep it simple because this is the first of several times they’ll open presents this year). M enjoyed “helping” S open her presents. S enjoyed touching everything except her own presents. We had a few inches of snow overnight and it made for a pretty beautiful “Christmas” morning.

Meeting Santa

This weekend (just before we experienced an overnight tummy bug with M) we went to visit Santa. M reports that she wants a basketball for Christmas. I confess that I fed her this wish because I have it on authority that that is what Santa will be bringing her. She also wants Monkey Socks, which I hear Santa is having a hard time finding this year.

Speaking of Santa, I’m writing over at CTWorkingMoms.com today about Getting Your Santa Story Straight!

13 :: December

Well, after a particularly trying week with my three year old, I’m making some changes for us, myself included.  By 6am today, M had already lost her visit with Santa this afternoon. I don’t really believe that threatening kids and taking things away works very well, but we were up to our ears in crying, screaming, hitting and kicking and we didn’t know what else to do in the heat of the moment. I was immediately upset that it took such a drastic turn because I really wanted to see Santa today too. I’d been looking forward to that all week too. So, after she had a pretty good go of it the rest of the morning, I discussed with her dad and got it back for her. One last hurrah. Tomorrow we start getting serious. So here’s how it will go down for us. I will stop losing my cool. I will walk away when she starts to lose hers, instead of pushing back on her and making it worse. I will take the time we need to work through these things instead of escalating the situation because we’re in a hurry to get out the door/in the car/into school, etc. I will not yell. I cannot get upset with her for yelling at me when I’ve done the same to her a lot lately. I will not take hitting and kicking. I will walk away. In turn, I will not be physical with her – restraining, trying to hug, picking up in a less than gentle way. Her father and I will focus on the children while they are awake. We will not ignore them in the precious evening time we have to get ready for the next day – we will attempt to do those things after they go to bed or be sure at least one parent is being fully present. We will get them to bed as early as possible. I would like the moods to start improving and the reactions to go back to just semi-off the wall before Christmas :)

That being said, my one thing a day plan seems daunting to me this week. I make the rules, and I can change them if I want. Now it’s one a week, even if some of them are super tiny things. So, here’s my list – some from me and some from my friends. Thanks for all the feedback.
