Watch Out Kitty

Now that she’s mobile, Miss M wants to get that kitty SO BAD.  She’s been chasing her all over the house.  The cat must like the attention, because she could certainly go hide in another room or under a bed if she didn’t.

Ujjayi Breathing in My Life

I found Ujjayi breath through my yoga practice.  Even though yoga isn’t a daily (or weekly) part of my life lately, I am still using this breathing technique often.  It was such a gift to have my birth partner, my husband, help me with Ujjayi breathing throughout M’s birth.  I often use it when I am putting M to sleep.  After she gets her bottle and I lay her down, my heart sometimes starts beating faster, anticipating her waking as I lay her down to sleep.  I breath deeply, first filling the lower belly, then moving the breath into the lower rib cage, and finally into the upper chest and throat.  I exhale through my nose and slow my heart rate and start to relax.  I also do this when she’s crying and we both need to take it down a notch.  I think she likes hearing me breathe, and it makes her settle down as well.  Whenever I start to feel myself tense up, I try to activate this breathing and just relax.  It’s been very helpful to me.

Here’s one of my favorite M tricks:

Stomach Sleeping

Well, since M has been able to roll back to front she has woken up multiple times per night, except one night!  She’s ending up on her tummy a lot and doesn’t really know what to do.  We’re also thinking some more new teeth might be to blame as well.  Whatever it is, she’s tired most mornings from waking up, and so are we!  The other day she slept later than I did and I was able to snap this cute picture of her new stomach sleeping position.

She Crawls!

What a week!  M learned to roll over from her back to her front.  And then today, SHE CRAWLED!  And not just once or twice, like all afternoon and across the room and back.  She’s not super fast and you could intercept her easily if need be, but we know it might only be a matter or a day or two until she’s on the loose completely!

After much consideration, we’ve decided to make this video on our YouTube Account public but unlisted (unfindable unless you have the link).  If you’d like to view additional videos or be notified when new videos go up, let me know and we’ll add you, or send a request on YouTube to MargeauxMushroom.

Rolling Over!

In only a few days she’s mastered rolling from her back to her front unaided!  What a big girl!  All it took was a little bit of practice.  We’re still working on her going from her front to her back, and we’re hoping we get it soon – she’s waking up several times a night upset about having rolled onto her stomach!

My Day

My Mother’s Day post is coming a bit late because our computer was broken and I wasn’t able to get photos off of our camera.  One third the price of the computer later, and it is fixed – geesh!  My first Mother’s Day was pretty awesome.  R’s dad and bro were visiting and we went out to brunch and then spent some time at Elizabeth Park looking at the tulips.  R has been so busy with school, it was just so nice to have him with us all weekend! (Don’t be fooled – her hair isn’t lying down now, it was just flattened here because she was wearing a hat).

Evaluation Results

Last night, at the suggestion of our pediatrician, we had an agency from Birth to Three come out to take a look at Miss M.  The concern is that she’s over 9 months old, and she still doesn’t roll over.  If you put her on her stomach, she stays there, and the same goes for on her back.  She squirms and scoots and pushes herself backwards, but she just doesn’t try to roll over, either way.  She goes to sleep on her back, and rolls to her side to get comfy, but never to her stomach on purpose.  She sits up, but doesn’t go from laying down to sitting up or vice versa.  So, they determined that she is not eligible for the program (which is good!) because she has great fine motor skills (picking up puffs, pointing, etc) but that her gross motor skills are lacking.  She’s skipped some important transitional movements, such as rolling over, and sitting up from laying down, or laying down from sitting up.  So, being the person that I am, I want to know – how did this happen?  I must have done something wrong.  If only I stayed home with her, I could have taught her.  Guilt. Guilt. and more Guilt.  They didn’t really give a reason, just a combination of things.   She has great strength and balance, so when she started sitting up, I don’t think we put her on her stomach as much.  She slept in a swaddle for many months and then a wearable blanket until about 2 weeks ago (because it’s cold up north!)  They assured me this doesn’t mean anything for her mental development and she is plenty strong.  They gave us several things to work on, including practicing rolling over and the correct way to learn to crawl.  We have a lot of work to do, but I am sure she will pick it up fast.  Even after working with them for an hour and a half last night, she was able to transition from sitting up to laying on her stomach this morning.  I know she’ll get it, but man, it sure makes you feel like you should have done more.  You immediately feel guilty for working, for time spent with her in the bouncer, and like you’re failing her.  I know that’s unreasonable, but it’s just how it is right now.  On a more positive note, the evaluation was easy and she enjoyed playing with them.  The evaluators were amazing and wonderful.  And thank goodness for a healthy, happy child.

The Freezer is Empty

M got the last bottle frozen milk today.  Our plan was for her to get one a day through the end of March, and we were able to get her all the way through April!   While we would have loved for it all to work out as planned, it’s worked out just fine and we’re grateful she’s a happy and health baby girl!
