Bike Helmet

6-16-13 M Bike HelmetWe were getting ready to get her trike out a few days ago and M said, I don’t have my hat on. She probably meant her sun hat, but it reminded me that she should probably be getting used to wearing a helmet. Luckily I had a hand me down one up in her closet. We got it all fitted to her head.  Can’t believe how fast my big girl is growing up.

20 :: June

As I mentioned, we had two big appointments last week. We had the eye doctor for S and the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor for M. Her tonsils look pretty huge to me (compared to my own), she snores like crazy and she mouth breathes all the tie (Darth Vader breath). We’d noticed all these things before, but just assumed this was typical of toddlers. It wasn’t until my mom arrived from Florida and said she didn’t think that was normal that we really began to pay attention to it. We took a few videos of her sleeping and realize now that she has Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Our pediatrician called her tonsils a 2.5 out of 4 (apparently this is a commonly used scale) and said that if we were concerned, we should see an ENT.  She’s not had an abundance of ear or throat infections, but her snoring and coughing at night is just horrible sounding. The ENT called her a 4 out of 4 in terms of tonsil size. They recommended surgery, but said if we wanted to think about it we could do a sleep study next. The idea of her and I spending the night in a sleep lab seems miserable and the doctor said it’s just that. And when I showed them the videos, they had no doubt that the right thing to do is to take out her tonsils and adenoids. So, we’ll be spending our fourth of July week off nursing M back to health after her surgery and over night stay at the children’s hospital. I hear the recovery is pretty bad and I’m really hoping she won’t remember this.  Poor kiddo.

In other news, she did not get chosen in the second magnet school lottery here, so she’ll be going to a private Montessori school in the fall.  While free school would have been great, the private school is going to be absolutely amazing and we’re very excited!

19 :: June

Last Thursday we had two important appointments.  The second one (I’ll write about the first one tomorrow) was to take S to the eye doctor. At her four month appointment her pediatrician thought she might have seen some exotropia in her left eye and wanted us to have it checked out. Taking a four and a half month old to the eye doctor didn’t sound like any fun to me, but it actually wasn’t too bad. These people are total pros! They even dilated her eyes. And I can’t believe they can tell this on a four month old, but – she’s extremely far sighted. It’s not so much the farsightedness that is the issue but that children accommodate for this by straining their eyes to see correctly and this can therefore cause a cross-eye or a lazy eye. She’ll have a follow up appointment in four months, when she’s eight months old. I didn’t ask a lot of what if questions. Believe me, I wanted to. But it doesn’t change anything, so we’ll just deal with it at the next appointment if we need to. They start kids as young as six months old in glasses! It was hard to hear that she’s not perfect and hard to hear that she may need to wear glasses (or may grow out of it) because you don’t ever want to think about how cruel kids can be. I just love this kid so much I want her to be this happy everyday!

Happy Daddy Day

We had such a lovely Fathers’ Day. We had a very nice visit from my cousin Amy. We grilled out a bunch, had a great brunch with the dads and had lots of quality time. Maybe it was the yellow shirt but S was just smitten with her daddy on Sunday, smiling at him whenever he caught her eye. She’s such a sweetheart! And M is just head over heels for my dad.  He takes her to school nearly every day and she loves following him around. I’m really lucky to have these two guys in my life, and so are my girls.

S is getting big fast. Here she is sitting up on the couch with the aid of her boppy pillow and trying out the bouncer for the first time (she can’t quite reach the ground). 6-8-13 S on couch6-8-13 S bouncer 1

12 :: June

I could call every post “my girls” and it would never get old (for me). Here are some more recent photos. M continues to bop right along with her life and every once in a while remember that she has a sister and say “Myyyy Siiiiissssttteerr.” S watches her constantly, but don’t point that out because M will say she doesn’t want her to watch her. Since my parents have arrived I’ve not had to put both girls to bed at once. I have someone to hold and amuse S while I put M to sleep. The other night I had them both by myself and it went just fine even though I had to nurse S through M’s bedtime routine. While getting them both in their jammies I realized that sometimes it’s nice to have to deal with both of them at once so that they will get some more interaction with each other as well. I snapped this cute photo of them post-bath pre-jammies.

And the photo below is M and S just after M was rocking S to get her to stop crying as we were getting ready to go somewhere.

My Girls

I’ve been doing a lot of comparing of the girls lately: When was M’s first tooth? When did M sit up? Does S have less head control than M did at this age? When did M roll over from back to front? I have to cut it out. They are different babies and different people. S spent some time in a bumbo seat this weekend for the first time. We don’t have one and didn’t really use the one we borrowed for M very much anyway. But it was fun to see her “sitting up.”

6-7-13 S in BumboOne of the recent tummy time pictures I took of S really made us think of a similar photo we took of M. M was younger, but it was really fun to look at them side by side like that and notice their similarities and differences. My girls! (“And also daddy’s girls” as M says)

CSA Week 1

I’m super psyched to finally have gotten my act together to sign up for a CSA. I’ve been thinking about it for years and finally made it happen. The one I’m doing is called a Whole Diet CSA. The farm that organizes it gets stuff from several farms to make it more of an assortment. There are options for meat, dairy, eggs, grains and fruits/veggies. I have a full share of fruits and veggies for June – October. I then split that with 2 other people. I get a half share and they each get a quarter share. For June at least, I am also signed up for 3lbs of meat, whole milk cow’s yogurt, a gallon of whole cow’s milk and a loaf of bread.  I was inspired by a friend of a friend‘s blog posts about what she got in her CSA. I was glad I read her blog, because I might have been disappointed with what I got the first week, but I’m not! I know it will just get better and better as the season rolls on. Pictures will contain the full share. I’ll be keeping half.week oneScreen shot 2013-06-07 at 2.25.52 PM
