Sisterly Love

While I hear a lot of:

“Throw her in the garbage”
“She has to go live at another house”
“Put her in time out”
“I hate her”
“BAD” S!”

I also am hearing more and more of:

“LIttle sister!”
“S, I love you this much”
“S, want to play . . .”

And every once in a while I catch this happening:

18 Months Old

S is 18 months old already! I know I say it every time, as does every other parent, but time really flies by! It seems like both yesterday and years and years ago that I had a baby.

Here's our little climber after getting herself up on the chair to reach a paper towel on the table.

Here’s our little climber after getting herself up on the chair to reach a paper towel on the table.

Weight: 21.4 lbs (10th percentile)
Height: 32 inches (55th percentile)
Looks like my girls are very similar in stats at this age.
S doesn’t seem as vocal as M was, but when I look back at posts, I see she’s just about on par. She’s much more physical. She will climb up on top of the dining room table if you turn your back for one minute and you can easily pull her off the coffee table 10 times in two minutes. She can get up on the bed by herself and she runs pretty fast. She has strong opinions and has started throwing herself on the ground and throwing a fit when she doesn’t get what she wants – like my phone or my drink. She still doesn’t seem to have a word for my mom or for M. I noticed just today she does seem to be saying Mamo, so maybe that’s her word for her sister? We’ll see. She starts in the toddler program at M’s Montessori school in about a month and we’re very excited about that. My mom has her 5 days a week all day while R is out of town so much this summer. She love love loves pups-pups and going outside. She’s a big fan of most foods, although I don’t offer enough veggies. She nurses two times a day – once when she wakes up and once before she goes to bed. (I’m planning to drop the morning feeding pretty soon – that’s a CTWM post to come). She’s been going to bed later because it’s summer and I’m not getting home until closer to 6pm with my new job, but she’s usually in bed (or wants to be) by 7pm or so. She wakes up about 5:15am pretty religiously, which has my feeling pretty tired lately. She’s a sweetheart and is quite goofy. She loves playing little games and is starting to really do what M does. Since she doesn’t have words, she’s been known to bite M (or my mom or I) when she’s upset about an injustice against her. That seems to thankfully be slowing down. She likes it when M picks her up (with help), loves sitting on M’s lap and loves giving M hugs. Those things usually happen once every couple of days. Not the love fest I thought it would be between these two sisters yet! I’m not giving up hope :)

No Pine Nut Pesto

Wrote a whole post and lost it. Hate that! Therefore this one will be short. Had tons of basil last year, didn’t realize you could freeze pesto, found a great pesto recipe, possibly from here, that uses almonds instead of pine nuts. Oh and I got an awesome food processor. Pesto freezes really well. You’re welcome.

PESTO:

1/4 c almonds (toasted at 450 for 5-10 mins)
3 cloves garlic
1.5 c fresh basil leaves
1/2 c olive oil
1 pinch nutmeg
S + P to taste

Combine all in food processor.

Birthday Party Success

R is out of town for M’s real birthday, so we celebrated early this weekend. On Friday night, R put together her new big girl bike! We set it out by the fireplace (like Christmas morning). On Saturday morning she went out to the living room, then came in to our bed like she always does. We were all in bed for about five minutes before she asked whose bike was in the living room. She was excited to learnt that it was hers! Unfortunately the front rim was bent so we had to exchange it and we haven’t put the second new bike together yet. She did get to ride the first bike for a little bit before we exchanged it.

We just went with the Target Hello Kitty bike, but it seems a lot sturdier than I imagined a bike with training wheels would be. I think it’s going to be great! She also got some rocks that say “M’s Rock Garden” to add to her rock garden and a set of puppets. A few more presents will come on her actual birthday.

We had a rainbow themed birthday party in our backyard on Saturday which I wrote about over at CTWMs today. I tie dyed shirts for all the kids to take home. It was a great time. While it was a lot of work, I loved having people come to our house and M really seemed to enjoy it! We had the tent (castle) and tunnel out. We had a station for making noodles necklaces. We had tons of bubbles and hula hoops. We had a swing set and soccer nets. We had a basketball hoop and a sprinkler. It was lots of fun!

Dad’s Home!

R has been in Canada (Vancouver area) for the past 19 days, but hey, who’s counting? We’re so glad to have him back home. Check out these adorable outfits he got for the girls. I took about 20 photos and this was the best one.

Words

S is just about 17 and a half months old. I keep saying that she’s less verbal than M was at this age, but when I look back at a similar post, I see that she’s not too far off. And she can scale the couch and the coffee table quite easily, which M could not do at this age.  Here’s the word list that I’ve been able to collect over the last few days:

New Hampshire Fourth of July

We traveled to New Hampshire for the fourth of July again this year. It’s a lovely tradition that includes a children’s parade, small town parade and as always lots of food, family and fun. This year there was a ton of rain, which was actually kid of nice. It did hold off for our super early morning strawberry picking. M was a champion picker and had a great time. Then it rained quite hard for a few hours, cleared up for the children’s parade and regular parade and then rained really hard for the rest of the day. We had beautiful weather for the farmers’ market on Saturday. M got her money together and used it to buy her first thing – a jar of blueberry jelly. She was quite proud of herself. She had a great time playing with her cousin E, as always. She had such a great time that she did not want to leave and there was a pretty epic fit when it was time to go, including kicking, screaming and a forced entry into the car. Not a super fun way to end the weekend visit – boo.

Through the Eyes of Children

M is getting older and I’m no longer able to rationalize my bad behavior by saying she won’t remember this. Anything I say or do or any poo-poo face I make could stick with her forever. I’d really like to keep my attitude toward her and the rest of my family a little more in check. It’s good to get a look at yourself through the eyes of children sometimes.
