CSA Pig

I have been slacking on the CSA photos – so I give up! We’re getting lots of really great stuff and I’m really excited to see what we get as summer fades into fall. Late spring greens and asparagus made way for blackberries, peaches, summer squash, broccoli, zucchini, green peppers, frying peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, basil and more.  My dad so kindly goes to pick up our loot every week and has started taking M along too.  She enjoys seeing the pigs!

As summer winds down quickly, R continues to impress me with his hard work on his doctoral thesis. I had a brief freakout about his progress, but he’s met with his adviser and is on track to turn in it late September to the committee for review and then, if all goes well (and it WILL!), he’ll graduate in early December. The end is in sight and it’s totally doable. School starts for him next week. I don’t even want to think about how hellish and lonely my life would be without my mom here to raise these children with me while he’s hitting the books (bass), but, tonsils aside, it’s been a really great summer! We’ve been eating outside most nights. As we wrap up dinner M will play some soccer with her new (blow up) soccer goal. We’re enjoying the pleasant weather and all the fresh veggies.

Train Ride

My parents took M and S on a scenic train ride a few weeks ago. They had just gotten M a great train set for her third birthday and she’s been really interested in trains. Oh, and Curious George went too. He goes everywhere these days – he’s M’s current favorite stuffed animal.

A Visit From Grandma

We had a lovely visit from Grandma J from Florida to help us celebrate M’s third birthday and S’s dedication. We had perfect summer weather, with nice cool evenings. These are the summer nights spent with family, eating outside and playing soccer until bath time that I’ll remember when the weather turns cold.

This past weekend we celebrated M’s 3rd birthday! Can’t believe my first baby girl is three!
We were so bogged down with the recovery from her having her tonsils and adenoids out that we really didn’t get it together to do much preparation for her birthday! But I threw together a pretty nice last minute (for me) party in our backyard. She’s really into monkeys and super into Curious George, so we had a Curious George themed party. I made a fabric banner out of monkeys dressed as ballerinas. We had cupcakes decorated with monkey toppers. She had a Curious George birthday shirt as did S and Grandpa R. We had about 8 kids and several adults. She had four kids from her school, two kids from my bookclub and two kids from my office. We had a sprinkler, a small inflatable pool, a sand table, bubbles, her new blow up soccer goal and balls and her play set. It was a really fun time!

Her official 3 year stats are: Weight: 25lbs 4oz (10th percentile) / Height: 35.5 inches (15th percentile)

Child Dedication Ceremony

7-28-13 s dedication 3

On Sunday, we had S’s Child Dedication Ceremony at our local Unitarian Universalist Meeting House.  It was very similar to M’s dedication, even down to the other families involved and the song sung! Another family has an older child about the same age as M and he was dedicated on the same day as M. His mom sung a beautiful song. This time around, we got in touch and decided to have the younger kids dedicated together too. She sung the same song – it was beautiful. S wore her paternal grandmother’s baptismal gown and the shoes that R wore at his baptism over 30 years ago. It was so special.

Here’s a little background on this type of service:

Rather than holding Christian-style baptism ceremonies, most Unitarian Universalist congregations have child dedication services for infants, young adopted children, or young children whose families have recently joined the congregation.

The parents bring the child to the front of the sanctuary at a designated time in a regular Sunday worship service, and the minister presides over the ceremony. The dedication ceremony is generally a celebration of the blessing of new life, an expression of the parents’ hopes for their child, and a call to the parents and the congregation’s members to lead and nurture the child’s spiritual life as it grows.

7-28-13 s dedication 6

Those present read the Congregational Commitment:

We each bear responsibility for the care and nature of all children. Our task is to seek peace and justice so that children may live without the threat of violence. Our task is to be good stewards of the earth, so that children may inherit a healthy planet. Our task is to seek truth and meaning, so that children may know by our example the value of spiritual living. Because our children learn to live as we live and learn to love as we love, we commit to live well and love deeply all the days of our lives.

  • We hope that as she grows she will retain her sense of wonder and her carefree demeanor.
  • We hope she will share our family’s love of nature, animals and music.
  • We wish for her the ability to stand up for herself without putting others down.
  • And we hope that she and her sister will always have a close and caring relationship.

7-28-13 s dedication 5

And one of the other mothers sang this song accompanied by the Music Director on the piano and R on the bass:

Everything Possible, by Fred Small:

We have cleared off the table, the leftovers saved,
Washed the dishes and put them away
I have told you a story and tucked you in tight
At the end of your knockabout day
As the moon sets its sails to carry you to sleep
Over the midnight sea
I will sing you a song no one sang to me
May it keep you good company.

CHORUS:
You can be anybody you want to be,
You can love whomever you will
You can travel any country where your heart leads
And know I will love you still
You can live by yourself, you can gather friends around,
You can choose one special one
And the only measure of your words and your deeds
Will be the love you leave behind when you’re done.

There are girls who grow up strong and bold
There are boys quiet and kind
Some race on ahead, some follow behind
Some go in their own way and time
Some women love women, some men love men
Some raise children, some never do
You can dream all the day never reaching the end
Of everything possible for you.

Don’t be rattled by names, by taunts, by games
But seek out spirits true
If you give your friends the best part of yourself
They will give the same back to you.

At the end they gave us a beautiful blanket that someone from the congregation had knitted for S – what a thoughtful gift!

6 Months Old

7-25-13 S 6 months

Weight: 15lbs, 2oz (45th percentile)
Height: 26″ (55th percentile)

Miss S is 6 months old! She’s been sleeping through the night for as long as I can remember. I know that I am SOOOO lucky that she does this and did it so early. She’s a total champ when it comes to eating “solid” food – opening wide and spitting hardly anything out. She’s working on sitting up unassisted. She sleeps on her stomach most nights. She talks and talks. She really only laughs/giggles when she’s watching her sister run around like crazy. She’s got two teeth still trying to come in. She’s just an absolute joy – so happy most of the time – especially in the mornings!

CSA Update and Recipes

I’ve really been slacking with photos of our CSA loot. Life has just been nuts (good nuts) and it makes a rather big mess to lay it all out!  We’ve moved away from greens the last few weeks. Now we’re getting blueberries, peaches and squash or cucumbers every week. And basil. Lots of basil. Since I grow basil in my garden I’d been giving it to my co-workers, but I finally decided to keep some and make some pesto. I’m still dairy free and I always think of basil as containing Parmesan cheese, but I found a good recipe without. Another plus to this recipe is that it contains almonds instead of pine nuts. I always have almonds. Pine nuts would require a special trip. And I was so excited to bust out the amazing food processor that R got me for Christmas this year that I’d not yet touched! I doubled the recipe and froze half of the sauce. I served it over pasta with my yummy CSA bread. So here it is, straight from Allrecipes.com:

Easy Pesto

Original recipe makes 6 servings
  • 1/4 cup almonds
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh basil leaves
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • salt and pepper to taste
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Place almonds on a cookie sheet, and bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
  2. In a food processor, combine toasted almonds, garlic, basil, olive oil, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Process until a coarse paste is formed.

We’ve also been getting tomatillos – something I had never seen before! So, I made a yummy green salsa from a recipe I also found on Allrecipes.com

Green Salsa

Original recipe makes 2 cups
  • 8 tomatillos, husked
  • 3 shallots
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chile peppers
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 fresh jalapeno pepper, seeded
  • salt to taste
  1. In a food processor, place tomatillos, shallots, garlic, green chile peppers, cilantro, jalapeno pepper and salt. Using the pulse setting, coarsely chop. Cover and chill in the refrigerator until serving.

Post Surgery

I had really hoped to do a better day to day account of what we were doing medicine wise and what she was eating/how she was doing, etc. because there isn’t a ton out there about this. But, it’s been so all consuming that I’ve not even been keeping good notes. Throughout this recover she’s been twirling her hair with one or both hands like crazy. Her hair is noticeably thinner and she’s constantly pulling out hair from the twirling.

Day Five – Sunday:

Today we decided to brave the heat for ice cream. Good idea and bad idea. It was hot hot hot and I don’t think being out in that made her feel very well. Up side was that she at HALF of a mini cherry fro-yo from Pinkberry. That’s a whopping 50 calories! But when she was done, she was done. And she cried most of the way home saying she was not comfortable.

Day Six – Monday:

Another rough night on the air mattress in her room together. She got up several times crying. And I really needed to get back to work after taking a week off. I ended up going in for a few hours in the morning and then coming home around lunchtime. I think tonight was the night that crying turned into her hysterically saying Mommy, Mommy, Mommy over and over again in her hurt little voice. Torture for me. She wants to be held, but is too uncomfortable to sit still and be held.

Day Seven – Tuesday:

The Mommy chant got louder last night and I called into work on this day. She wasn’t eating or drinking today and we hoped that meant the scabs were falling off. One sip of juice or water made her cry with pain. I spoke again to the nurse to make sure this pain was not out of the ordinary and mentioned she wouldn’t really eat or drink. She’d only had one real pee today and they said if she didn’t get another one by 5pm we were to take her back to the hospital for fluids. Instead of drinking she wanted to go to sleep, so we planned to go to the emergency room after R came home and we all had dinner. We gave her the prescription medication before we left and she perked up a bit on the car ride (maybe she just needed a change of scenery!). Once we got into a room, she said she was hungry. I got her a Popsicle and she proceeded to eat three of them! She hadn’t even eaten three all week at home. The only thing I can guess is that she didn’t like the all fruit Popsicle I had at home and would prefer the super artificial ones the hospital has. Maybe the fruit based ones were too acidic for her throat! So, here’s a tip – get the cheapest Popsicles you can find! They PA looked at her throat, said it looked good and sent us home. She did say the scabs were still on. I thought for sure that after eating three Popsicles she might have a better night, but she did not.

Day Eight – Wednesday:

This day was so/so from what I can remember – but more toward the good. I came into work super early and left early too. I worked on getting her to eat and drink and she did some good eating in the afternoon when I was home. She had half of a hamburger bun, a cheese stick, a few Popsicles. I thought we were moving in the right direction, but the night was horrible again. She woke up several times crying, one of which was her just hysterical about her stomach hurting. I could hear her twisting her hair and the hair ripping out all night long.

Day Nine – Thursday:

We thought that after Wednesday she must be on the up and up but were disappointed about the overnight. We decided to scrap our long weekend vacation plans. This day was not as good as the day before.

Friday – Sunday:

She was on the up and up but still being really clingy and wanted to be held a lot.  Still taking long naps and telling us when she wanted to lie down. I still would not have sent her to school on Monday.

Monday:

Finally doing much better.

Tuesday – 2 weeks out:

Finally almost back to herself, starting to push boundaries again and skipped a nap.

__________________________________________________________________________

Thank goodness this seems to be behind us. What a tough ride. She’s back to sleeping through the night (2 weeks later!) I think I’ll know we’re really back to normal when she’s “regular” again. She just looks so thin, although when we took her to the ER she hadn’t lost even a half of a pound. And she needs to grow back all that hair she twisted and twirled out because she was so upset. And her toes are covered in exzema from the stress – she’s never had it before. But I’m just so so so happy to have my happy girl back! And when I walk by her room at night she isn’t snoring and I can’t hear her breathing loudly!

Finally a Laugh!

IMG_4693

I know I say this about every day, but I just cannot believe how fast my baby is growing up. Since I probably won’t have another baby, every little stage that ends or begins seems to be more of a big deal. She’s sleeping through the night every night now (and has been for a little while) and it’s heaven. Now that M is feeling better and back to sleeping through the night life feels a little more settled. S finally laughed last night! I can’t believe it took her almost 6 months to laugh. M made it happen with us pushing her to keep talking to S and making funny noises. I hope that by 6 months old S will be laughing on her own all the time! Baby giggles are one of the absolute most beautiful sounds in the world. She started eating real food and has had bananas, apples and pears so far. She really digs the bananas! Next we’ll move to veggies – squash, sweet potatoes and carrots. I know it’s a gross milestone but she had her first different poop yesterday from the real food she’s eating. She seems to be getting two teeth on the bottom in the front, but they are taking forever to be visible (I think I feel them). And she’s almost sitting up! Slow it down – you’re growing up too fast little Miss S!

10 :: July

She’s getting big so fast. I swear she feels heavier every morning when I pick her up! She’s rolling this way and that like crazy, so we busted out the foam letters and numbers to make her a “play area” that is *hopefully* somewhat free of dog hair.
