30 :: January

Wow. January has absolutely flown by. We’re ready for some warm weather around here. When I change my babies and see their beautiful soft skin, I long for summer and to see their knees and elbows again! S is going to start transitioning up to the pre-toddler room at daycare. This means consistent nap times (9:30am and 2pm, I think) as well as using the sippy cup only. We’re actually ahead of the game there, as I packed up all of the bottles this week. One of my very best high school friends is shopping for bottles and I want desperately to send them to her, but I’m just not there yet. Oh the things I will gift an expecting mom some day! The other change in the new room at daycare is that S will begin sleeping on a cot instead of in a crib. Even if this is successful, I think it will some time before we make this switch at home. I think we moved M to a big girl bed just after she turned 2 years old, but only because we were going to be needing the crib for S. All things with kiddos are bittersweet. I’m happy she’s growing and healthy (and sleeping all night!) but I’m sad to see my baby girl go.

Happy First Birthday!

I can’t believe S is 1 year old already. It’s all going by way too fast. I can say that because she sleeps a solid 10-11 hours a night. We celebrated her birthday by having a few close friends over and having pizza and cake. She loved having us sing her happy birthday.

She’s still a pretty relaxed baby. She crawls really fast, pulls up to standing very easily and walks behind a push toy. She hasn’t yet taken any steps on her own and doesn’t really stand up unaided. She goes to bed at about 6:30-7pm, but would go to sleep earlier if we could get our acts together, and she sleeps until about 5-6am. She likes the tub, but once she’s done in the bath she’s ready for bed. This week she’s even been resisting cuddling and just wanting to be put down in her crib for bedtime. She’s a total goofball – hamming it up for R at the dinner table.

Registry List Suggestions

Today I’m over at CTWorkingMoms.com doing what I do best – making lists.

I’ve finally typed up a running list that I’ve had going for some time about what I think you need to get (and don’t need to get) when you start shopping for a new baby.

“I Want to Put it in a Present”

M has been drawing us a LOT of pictures lately. Mostly they are just scribbles, but it’s still so cute. She’s always liked coloring and being creative at home. I knew that with her moving to a Montessori school she would not be bringing home the amount of “crafts” that she’d done at her previous school. The fall came and went and she hadn’t brought anything home. I brought it up at her parent/teacher conference – letting them know that she really likes making art. They assured me she has access to all of those things in her classroom and could choose to do so on her own. One of the principles of Montessori is that the child decides what they might like to “work” with at any given time. They are free to move about the classroom, using things they’ve received a lesson on. I finally asked M why she hadn’t colored or painted anything at school and she said she had not had a lesson on crayons or paint yet. I was pretty sure she didn’t need one, but confirmed with the teacher. And now that she knows – she’s drawing us stuff just about every day. I chose to open that can of worms! Her teachers and I had all told her she could ask for a lesson on anything, but I guess she didn’t want to ask. Lesson learned. Long story to say that when they bring art home from school they roll it up, put a piece of SCOTCH tape on it and put it in their backpack to take home. So of course this is what she wants to do with all her stuff from home. She also wants to wrap it up and “put it in a present.” I let her use the Christmas wrapping paper once but now that it’s in the attic (it took me a while to put away Christmas) I’ve encouraged her to decorate the back side of the paper and call that wrapping paper.  Lately, she’s been making us tons of stuff and leaving it places (mostly on our nightstands, or in my purse). Here’s a photo of my nightstand. I’ve got one for each day of the week to open!

On another note, my little sweetheart was bitten pretty badly by her little sister yesterday. And how did she handle it? She reacted by hugging S, so she’ll learn that we don’t bite! How adorable! Of course that was right after she screamed bloody murder. I think I would have too – it looks like it hurt!

Izzie’s Bed – Take 2

S is really interested in the dog crate all of a sudden. I guess she’s been opening and closing the door for a little while, but now she’s trying to get into it as well. I’ve noticed that both times she’s really gone in and laid down have been when she was tired. As you might remember if you’re a long time reader, M was pretty interested in opening and closing it as well and also liked to snuggle up with Izzie from time to time.

Maybe Just One More?

Today I’m over at CTWorkingMoms.com trying to talk myself out of having another baby. If only S wasn’t so darn cute.

S Walks (with help)

S is totally cruising furniture now. She’s even walking behind push toys. M has even helped her walk across the room once or twice too! She’s just not a baby anymore and it’s so sad and awesome at the same time.

And as I posted on CTWorkingMoms.com this week, M has really had a change of heart when it comes to her sister. She’s become so affectionate to S and to us lately. She’s such a sweet girl.  Here she is helping S learn to walk.

An Only Child Learning How to Raise Sisters

I’ve always said that I’ll consider myself a successful mom if my children grow up to be kind and compassionate human beings. With this goal in mind, I’ve been quite dismayed to witness the indifference and sometimes aggression that my three year old has had towards her baby sister. (Read the rest at ctworkingmoms.com)

M Santa Present

This year when my parents were here M enjoyed counting and spotting all of the basketball hoops around the neighborhood with my parents. Santa thought this might be a present she’d enjoy and I kind of prepped her – would you like Santa to bring you a basketball? Yes! So, all she asked for Santa for was a basketball and a new pair of monkey socks, since she’s outgrowing hers and will give them to S. She got a basketball and a basketball hoop – plus monkey socks in her stocking. Since my mom arranged this present with Santa, we decided it would be ok for Santa to deliver it a day early to Grandma Sue’s house. M loved it and spent lots of time at our play date playing basketball. She even got really good at it!

S Santa Present

In our family, Santa brings one present for each kid (and maybe one joint family present) plus he fills the stockings. S LOVED her Santa present!
